FAQ

What is Strength & Conditioning Coaching?

A Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Coach plans, delivers and reviews the physical and physiological preparation of athletes aligned to specific sports performance outcomes.

In order to do this, Strength and Conditioning Coaches have a deep understanding of the physical characteristics required to excel in sports performance. They understand what it takes for an athlete to be resilient to the demands of the intensity and volume within their training environment thus maximizing the technical training opportunities in their respective sports.  Plans can then be specifically tailored to the adaptations required, and, maximized in the strength and conditioning coaching environment in-line with the culture of the sport.

Strength and Conditioning is about more than lifting weights – it encompasses the entire physical development of the athlete and what is required to allow them to be the best physical version of themselves.

Who can benefit from a Strength & Conditioning Coach?

Short answer.... EVERYONE!!!

Strength & Conditioning benefits anyone who wants to physically better themselves to achieve a sporting goal, overcome an injury, or commit to a long term athletic development strategy.

A S&C coach will ensure that an athlete is capable of exceeding the demands of their sporting environment whilst preparing them for the physical hardship their training programme will demand. Through a comprehensive needs analysis of your sport, a S&C coach will be able to create a bespoke programme to cater for your wants and needs.

When rehabilitating an injury, a S&C coach will take into account the previous injury history, collaborate with the relevant associated medical practitioners, utilise the latest evidenced based research to maximise recovery and develop a robust individual who is stronger, fitter and more physically able then before the injury occurred.

Is Strength & Conditioning safe for Youth Athletes?

Short Answer... YES (If done correctly)

Common myths are that weight training can stunt growth, damage joints and has to be initiated post puberty has been repeatedly proven to be false.

Long term athletic development (LTAD) introduces aspiring youth athletes to fundamental movement skills that form the foundations to all sports and physical activities whilst promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Being able to sufficiently control forces throughout the body during performance tasks such as; acceleration (sprinting), deceleration (landings), change of direction (turning) and absorb unexpected impacts (tackling) will significantly improve performance, reduce growth related injury risks (Severs Disease, Osgood-Schlatters Disease) and minimise time lost from training which can impact on long-term technical and tactical development.

A S&C coach will educate a young athlete on how to perform the exercises correctly, explain their importance for long term development and their relevance to sport and injury reduction. They will also promote safety in and around a gym environment, how to prepare for competition and optimise recovery.

Testamonials

Ben possesses every quality you’d want in a great coach. He’s bright, motivational, passionate, disciplined, and hungry to get better. More importantly, he instills these same qualities in the athletes and coaches he interacts with. I’ve been fortunate enough to work closely with Ben for the last 4 years.

Ben has shown intense dedication to training athletes while using the most advanced techniques in his field. His thirst for cutting edge training methods drives his knowledge base. He continually researches the most recent strength and agility techniques and applies them to the specific individuals that he trains. He accurately uses sport specific drills that promote performance enhancement and, more importantly, injury prevention. His broad knowledge base allows him to successfully train a multitude of athletes from all different sports with equal expertise and purpose.

Since working with Ben, I’ve seen all aspects of my fitness increase dramatically, especially my strength. Ben prepared me for life on the Professional Squash Tour, going above and beyond to create individualized training programs to help me improve my endurance, strength, explosive power and agility - no doubt essential components to my rise from #500 to #42 in the World within my first two seasons on tour. My success would definitely not be possible without him. Ben has shown me how to work to the best of my ability and also built my self-confidence to believe in myself as an athlete. I look forward to every training session and the new challenges that they bring.
